We are excited to announce the commencement of our first ever Ark Social Skills Training programs, commencing in 2020.
Two of our experienced staff are being trained by PEERS Australia founder Dr Elizabeth Laugeson to deliver the PEERS program in Perth. PEERS stands for the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills. Developed at UCLA by Dr Laugeson, PEERS is a world leading, evidence based manualized social skills training program which focuses on enhancing real world skills for adolescents and young adults who experience social challenges.
Where did this program come from?
We were inspired to provide our staff with the skills to deliver this program after watching Dr Laugeson’s program on the hit show Love on the Spectrum which can be viewed on ABC or Netflix. Many of our clients who also watched this show identified this type of program as something they would love the opportunity for their loved ones to participate in. We have included the link to a snippet of Love on the Spectrum here:
How will the program run and who is it for?
The program is a 14-week evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated individuals, who are interested in learning skills to make and keep friends and/or handle conflict and rejection. During each session, participants are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills and is suitable for adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum, ADHD, anxiety, depression and other socio-emotional challenges. Two programs are available: adolescents and young adults.
Participants attend a 90-minutes session each week, and their social coach (i.e., parent, family member, support worker, mentor, etc) will also attend a 90-minute workshop each week (simultaneously, though independent of each other). Social coaches are taught how to assist young adults in making and keeping friends by providing feedback during weekly socialisation homework assignments. Regular attendance is imperative and social coach participation is required.
What if I don’t have a social coach?
If you do not have a social coach available, please let Ark know and we can arrange one for you at an additional cost.
Enrolment is limited. Groups are a minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 for each program. This is to ensure all participants are receiving appropriate support and coaching throughout the workshop. Participants are allocated to groups of similar age, interests, etc to maximise on social skills building. Please note that we do not launch the program until appropriate groups are established.
We are currently taking expressions of interest for our programs – if you are interested please complete the form below and we will get back to you with more information.
